Living with a roommate will probably be something new to you.
To help you get used to your new situation, we have a few tips:
Be realistic: Anyone who has shared a flat will tell you anything can happen. Just be open minded, straightforward with any thing you have in mind, keep in touch and talk together.
Chemistry: Be sure that your future roommate suits your wants and needs. It’s not nice to live with a person who you can’t come to terms with. Make sure you ask a lot of questions and clarify the whole situation before you move along. Possibly meet a few times, and learn to know each other, the more honest you are the less unpleasant surprises will come.
Keep the lines of communication open. Discuss potential areas of conflict. Be prepared to compromise. If necessary, make a list of some basic rules on general things like: Music, smoking, eating habits, and visits. This will reduce the chances of misunderstanding. If your roommate does something you do not like, be honest, even to yourself. And do something about the problem right away, small problems can quickly grow if you do not get it talked through.
Respect each other: It is important to have mutual respect for each other and each other’s desires. Your roommate can become a friend for life, and sharing should probably be one of the best and most instructive times in your life. Enjoy!
